Kipuka

An island of survival within isolation

Many of the songs on Kipuka were shaped by a shared stay on the Danish North Sea coast in January 2020. When the coronavirus pandemic began to reveal itself only weeks later, those coastal impressions acquired a new emotional weight: distance, exposure and retreat became inseparable from the experience of a rapidly changing world.

A kipuka is an island of older land or vegetation surrounded by a field of lava. The image becomes the album's central metaphor: life survives, but survival also means isolation. The music moves through that contradiction, creating wide electronic and ambient spaces that can feel protected and vulnerable at the same time.

The lyrics work as poetic fragments rather than linear stories. Associative images, recurring motifs and open meanings sketch inner states and perceptions, while the predominantly instrumental music carries most of the emotional narrative. The few vocal pieces add another layer of sound and significance rather than interrupting the album's spacious flow.

A central concern is the search for an unfiltered view of the world beyond inherited expectations and fixed roles. Dusk, movement, travel and changing landscapes become metaphors for transitions between safety and uncertainty, orientation and dislocation. The figures remain in motion, neither arrived nor entirely lost.

Surreal and sometimes enigmatic combinations of images place atmosphere above a single message. In the spirit of psychedelic rock and art pop, sound, rhythm and association matter as much as literal meaning. The texts become poetic points of orientation within an open, introspective soundscape, inviting listeners to bring their own images into the music.
