Direct stories, rough guitars and early hard pop

Fracture is the second release by Die Engineers and the first recorded with a complete band. Made in a studio in Delmenhorst, it gathers songs written between 1993 and 1997. Its rough, guitar-led production carries strong traces of 1980s wave and punk while pointing towards the band's own hard-pop identity.

The lyrics remain close to classic alternative and indie-rock storytelling. Unlike the increasingly fragmented language of later projects, these songs tell recognisable stories and make their emotional positions clear. Relationships, social observation and the search for a place in a contradictory world form the album's centre.

Appearances and reality repeatedly pull apart. Beauty, expectations and superficial ideals are questioned through irony rather than moral instruction. Encounters and human closeness offer hope, yet relationships remain fragile, shaped by chance, uncertainty and the desire for something lasting.

Social dissatisfaction adds another layer: love and hate, peace and conflict, optimism and disappointment exist side by side. Narrative passages, memorable repetition and direct refrains keep the writing accessible, while early metaphors already introduce themes that would follow Michael Keuth's later work — identity, convention and the tension between inner longing and external reality.
